Treatment for broken capillaries and birthmarks in Launceston, TAS

Do you have:
  • Visible broken red vessels on your face, neck or chest?
  • Little red dots on your body?
  • Rosacea and/or flushing across your cheeks, chin & nose?
  • Do you have trouble covering the redness of your cheeks with foundation when you go out?
  • Port Wine Birthmark?
  • Are you male and find the facial redness and/or visible veins on the cheeks and nose embarrassing?

The PhotoDerm MultiLight (IPL) has been designed for treatment of unwanted vascular lesions in the skin using high energy broad-spectrum light. Large areas can be treated quite quickly with minimal disturbance to the overlying tissue.

When exposing tissue to high energy light pulses and at the same time controlling the frequency and the intensity of the light pulse, specific tissues can be selected as targets. When exposed to the target tissue (blood vessels) the high-energy light is converted into heat, and once the temperature reaches a high enough level the blood in the vascular lesion will coagulate. The coagulated blood over a period of time will be absorbed by the surrounding tissue.

N.B. Some vascular procedures may attract a medicare rebate. This will be determined upon consultation.

What happens during treatment?
It is preferable if you present with makeup free skin, if this is not possible makeup may be removed prior to procedure. A consent form will need to be signed and a photo is taken so that when you return in six weeks time for a check we have a pre procedure picture to compare results with. You will wear protective glasses or eye pads as the light although not as dangerous as a laser it is very bright.

A thick layer of cold gel will be applied to the treatment site and on the top of that will rest a small crystal. Pulses of light will begin and, at the same time as the bright light, you will feel a stinging sensation similar to a rubber band flick. This sensation will be more intense in areas where the vessels are at their worst. This will continue until the treatment area is covered.

The gel is then removed and a cool sunscreen cream is applied. If you wish a very light powder to cover any redness is also applied at this time.

What Will I Look Like After?
The area will be slightly reddened. This may be covered with light powder specifically designed to cover redness and protect from the sun. You may have some puffiness of the skin especially under the eyes. This will last for 24 - 48 hours. You may have a blister or some bruising which will resolve in a few days. These side effects do not happen in all cases, however they can happen and it is best not to organise any official functions for the first 2 - 3 days after your procedure.

What kind of result should I expect?
You will need to return to the clinic in six weeks for review. The result of your treatment will depending on the severity of the vessels and the sensitivity of your tissue. Quite often only one session is necessary however if further treatment is required, then there must be at least six weeks between vascular treatments.

You will find that you will:

  • Use less makeup.
  • Have a more even complexion
  • Feel much more confident about your appearance.

I would like to go further what steps do I take?
You will first need to have a consultation with either our nursing staff or cosmetic physician. Providing you are suitable for treatment you may have the treatment the same day or book for a later date. You will need to have minimal sun exposure on your skin to reduce the risk of any complications.

What about post treatment care?

  • Care should be taken to prevent trauma to the area for the first four to five days following treatment.
  • You are advised not to partake in vigorous exercise, have hot showers, saunas or drink alcohol for two to three days after treatment as this shall make the facial vessels dilate.
  • You may wash as usual but avoid the use of scrubs, masks, astringents, toners, Retin A or glycolic acid products during the first week. Gently pat the area dry after washing and avoid rubbing with your towel.
  • If stinging persists following treatment, application of a cool pack (not ice) will help to soothe the skin quite quickly. Cool packs may also help to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • When using makeup, apply lightly and remove gently.
  • If flaking of the skin occurs, avoid picking the scabs and keep the area moist by liberally applying moisturiser. Contact the Clinic if pain or stinging persists after the first two days.
  • Do not take Aspirin or Aspirin combinations for pain as this may increase the risk of bruising.
  • It is important to avoid exposing the treated area to the sun for six weeks after treatment. You must apply 30+ oil-free sun block to the area each day and avoid direct exposure by wearing a hat or protective covering.

Who Performs the Treatments?
All treatments are performed by our Registered Nurse and/or Dr Julie Ostberg who are fully trained and experienced in IPL and Laser treatments.

How Much Will It Cost?
Costs will vary with areas being treated. They may range from $55.00 for a small area - $330.00 for a full face.

N.B. Some Vein treatments may be eligible for a Medicare Rebate, this will be determined upon consultation.
