Tattoos are often dark (black, blue) in colour, but multicoloured tattoos, which may contain yellow, green, purple, orange and red are becoming increasingly popular.
Another class of tattoo is traumatic tattoos, which are caused by black or dark blue pigment from tar or ink entering a wound.
Amateur tattoos are usually deeper than professional ones. In amateur tattoos, dye insertion is manually controlled, thus it is difficult to control depth of the tattoo. At Victoria´s Cosmetic Medical Clinic we can remove tattoos using the Photoderm Multilight.
The PhotoDerm MultiLight treats the tattoos using the principle of selective photothermolysis. The goal is to raise the temperature of the pigment high enough to shatter the pigment, without damaging the normal epidermis and the surrounding tissue. The pigment is then eliminated from the tissue by a process called phagocytosis, (the cells dissolving the foreign tissue). How is the treatment performed?
A cool gel is placed over the tattoo, you will be given special goggles to wear to protect your eyes. A small crystal will be placed over the gel on the tattoo and a series of bright flashes will occur at the same time you will feel a flicking similar to a hot elastic band flick. The area will become quite red and raised over the next one to two hours. Some blistering may occur.
The removal of shattered particles of the tattoo ink as well as the debris of the fibrotic capsule around the tattoo can be assisted by the increased intake of water following the treatment of tattoo removal.
Over the next few days there will be a scabbing of the tattoo area that has been treated. When everything has healed over there should be some noticeable fading of the tattoo colour that has been treated. A series of treatments will be necessary to remove or fade the tattoo to a satisfactory level.
After 4 - 6 weeks the skin should be healed enough for further treatment. What pre-treatment is required?
Do Not use artificial tans or solariums for 6 weeks prior and at least 6 weeks post treatment to avoid burning of the treatment site. Staying out of the sun for 6 weeks and using the highest protection of sunscreen is important prior to treatment as it may cause hyper- or hypo-pigmentation or discoloration of the treated area.
What post-treatment is required?
Special care should be taken to prevent trauma to the treated area for the first four or five days following treatment: No hot bath, no aerobic exercise, massage, etc. If scabs appear after blistering, they should be kept soft with a lubricating cream such as Vaseline.
It is important to use the highest factor sunscreen and protect the treated area from exposure to sunlight for one month following treatment. Tanning after treatment sessions my increase the risk of hypo- and hyper-pigmentation. Makeup may be worn after treatments however if irritation, or inflammation is present discontinue use until area returns to normal. If the treatment site is exposed to dirt, it should be covered with a dressing for ten days. It is advised not to participate in rough sports or similar activities for several days following treatment, until the skin returns to its normal condition. A return visit in 6 - 8 weeks is required to asses the site, and for further treatments as necessary. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the treatment, please feel free to contact us.
